This is an ASCII copy of the first 164 pages of the second
edition of Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as "the Big Book," as
well as forewords and appendices.  The copyrights on the first
and second editions have expired, and are now in the public
domain.  The second edition is nearly identical to the third
edition now in use.  This copy is made for research purposes, and
may be distributed freely.

    The page numbering is identical to that used in both the
second and third editions, and each line is also the same.  For
clarity, blank lines have been inserted between paragraphs; these
may be easily removed for those who use indexes based on line
numbers.  All lines are left-justified.  Due to the limitations
of ASCII, different fonts cannot be shown.  In most cases,
italics, or "squiggly writing," have simply been capitalized. 
Figures used in some footnotes have been added updated for 1993,
as well as addresses.

     Most of the text has been taken from the file BIG164.ZIP. 
This file contains numerous errors, which were corrected where
discovered.  Possibly others still exist.  If you find any
